HTPLA Prints Not Coming Out Right? Start Here
HTPLA is a friendly filament to work with, but it can still throw a few curveballs. Here are the most common problems crafters run into and the fixes that actually work.
Problem: Warping or Lifting Corners
Corners peel up off the bed mid-print, especially on larger flat parts.
- Fix: Increase bed temp to 55–60°C, make sure your bed is level and clean (wipe with isopropyl alcohol), and add a brim in your slicer for extra corner adhesion
- Also try: Reduce drafts by closing windows/vents near your printer or adding a simple enclosure
Problem: Stringing Between Parts
Thin hair-like strands of plastic stretch between separate sections of your print.
- Fix: Increase retraction distance and speed slightly in your slicer, and lower nozzle temp by 5–10°C if you're on the high end of the 210–230°C range
- Also try: Turn on "combing" mode if your slicer supports it, to keep the nozzle over already-printed areas during travel moves
Problem: Weak Layer Adhesion / Splitting
Layers separate or the print snaps cleanly along a layer line under light stress.
- Fix: Increase nozzle temp slightly (try 225–230°C), slow down print speed for better layer bonding, and make sure your cooling fan isn't blasting each layer before it can properly fuse to the one below
- Reminder: Annealing after printing (see our HTPLA annealing guide) significantly boosts strength for functional parts
Problem: Poor First Layer / Not Sticking to Bed
The print won't stay put for the first few layers.
- Fix: Re-level your bed, clean it with isopropyl alcohol, and slow your first layer speed down in the slicer. A glue stick or painter's tape can help on glass beds.
Problem: Rough or Under-Extruded Surface
Visible gaps between lines, a rough or fuzzy texture, or thin/weak walls.
- Fix: Check your extruder for clogs or worn gears, verify your filament diameter setting matches your actual filament, and try increasing flow rate slightly (102–105%)
Problem: Color Looks Duller Than Expected (Metallics & Glitters)
Metallic or glitter finishes look flat instead of shimmery.
- Fix: Orient your model so flat surfaces catch light at an angle, slightly reduce print speed for cleaner outer walls, and avoid over-cooling, which can dull surface sheen on some specialty finishes
