Everything You Need to Know About Applying HTV with a Heat Press
Heat transfer vinyl (HTV) is one of the most satisfying crafting materials out there — but a perfect press requires more than just heat. Whether you're using standard smooth HTV or a specialty finish like glitter, puff, or glow-in-the-dark, this guide walks you through every step from design to final peel.
What You'll Need
- Your heat transfer vinyl (see our favorites below)
- A heat press (not a household iron — consistency matters!)
- Cutting machine (Cricut, Silhouette, etc.)
- Weeding hook
- Teflon sheet or parchment paper
- A lint roller to prep your garment
Step 1: Design & Mirror Your Image
Create or import your design in your cutting software. Always mirror (flip) your image before cutting — HTV is cut on the liner side, so your design needs to be reversed to read correctly when pressed onto your garment.
Step 2: Cut Your HTV
Place your HTV shiny-side (liner) down on your cutting mat. Set your blade depth and speed according to your machine's recommended HTV settings. A clean cut goes through the vinyl but NOT through the carrier sheet. Do a test cut first!
Step 3: Weed Your Design
Use a weeding hook to remove all the excess vinyl from around (and inside) your design, leaving only the pieces you want to transfer. Take your time — detailed designs need patience here.
Step 4: Prep Your Garment & Heat Press
Pre-press your garment for 3–5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles. This makes a huge difference in adhesion. Set your heat press to the correct temperature and time for your specific HTV:

Always check the manufacturer's sheet for your specific vinyl — settings can vary by brand and fabric.
Step 5: Position & Press
Place your weeded design on the garment, carrier sheet facing up. Cover with a Teflon sheet to protect the vinyl and ensure even heat distribution. Close the press firmly and start your timer.
Step 6: Peel & Finish Press
Once time is up, peel the carrier sheet according to your HTV type (hot, warm, or cold — see the table above). If any edges lift, re-press for 5 more seconds under a Teflon sheet. After peeling, do a final press of 3–5 seconds with your Teflon sheet on top to lock in the adhesion and smooth the surface.
